Peer Tube

Posted on 2019-09-28 by Paul Sutton

Peer Tube

A decentralized video hosting network, based on free/libre software

Peer tube is another service on the Fediverse. That allows you to upload video and share this with other.  The difference is there are no adverts and fewer limitations on what you can upload.  You still need to stay within the law though.   Having used this I found it pretty straight forward and it transcoded my video in a few hours.  As stated above this is all based on Free / Libre software.

PodCast Search

Posted on 2019-09-26 by Paul Sutton

PodCast Search

While on the Fediverse you come across lots of useful links to other resources.  One that I found recently was https://podsearch.com/

As the name suggests this allows you to search for a pod cast in a good range of topics.

Libre Lounge is another podcast that has covered different aspects of the Fediverse, this includes some of the more technical aspects including a multipart discussion on Activity Pub.   Activity pub is one of the protocols that allows posts to be federated across the network.

You can find the Devon and Cornwall GNU / Linux user group on the fediverse at https://social.isurf.ca/profile/dcglug

Or search using dcglug@social.isurf.ca

Fedora : How to help

Like any project,  help is always welcome, there is a similar too to that I posted with relation to Libreoffice, but for anyone looking to help with Fedora.

Fedora : How to help

Fedora creates an innovative, free, and open source platform for hardware, clouds, and containers that enables software developers and community members to build tailored solutions for their users.

What Can I do for Fedora

Repl.it

Repl.it

Repl.it is a web based development environment.  This gives you an instant IDE to develop your code and projects.   It has recently been updated so that it is multiplayer by default so you can collaborate in real time with fellow developers / hackers, which should help increase productivity and or learning / teaching potential of this platform.   Great work to the Development team.

Please see https://repl.it/ for more information and to sign up.

LibreOffice : How to help

LibreOffice is a well featured free and open source office suite.  As with any project contributors are welcome and encouraged to get involved. There are lots of different jobs to do, so not everything is about coding.   Please see the following link for more information, and see how you may be able to help.

Plymouth LUG meeting report – July 2019

Posted on 2019-07-27 by Paul Sutton

With Café Fandom closed again, possibly for good, we regrouped at the Crown and Anchor on Southside Street. Topics included:

  • The National Museum of Computing : definitely worth a visit if you like retro computing.
  • The Yalp Store : a way to install Google Play Store apps without having to install the Google Play Store (good if you have a de-googled Android phone (e.g. Lineage OS, Fairphone Open) but can’t avoid the odd closed-source app
  • Raspberry Pi 4 – hot as the sun, non-compliant with USB C, and rare as hen’s teeth
  • Debian Buster
  • GDPR – has it improved things?
  • Controlling your kid’s internet access
  • Deep learning, picture classification
  • Floppy drives orphaned by Linux kernel
  • First experiences of Linux
  • Emax (yes, Emax, although I did also have an Emacs t-shirt on…) and SCSCI2SD
  • IT in Special Needs
  • LAN gaming on Linux

From the August meeting, Plymouth LUG will move to the Moments Café.
