1. Is your machine a UEFI machine?
See http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix-uefi-en.html

2. What version of Knoppix did you download:
Correct one is
KNOPPIX_V8.2-2018-05-10-EN.iso (English USA default)

I just disregard compiz. (but it can be set from menu or sometimes
removed from start up by "no3d" cheat code, in same line as
 knoppix lang=uk no3d

Note if it ['no3d'] fouls your graphics system load it will generate an
error and you need to use power button to stop, machine.

Compiz it is in system so Knoppix Adriane (for visually impaired has
some items of use.)

3. Are you loading from a DVD or
a USB memory stick.

In USB memory stick the boot load page with penguin and the two lines of
text , second one being boot line adjustments; comes up on my system in
about 0.8 seconds (old vista machine) or about 1.5 seconds on a more
modern Dell (old windows 7 machine)

You need to be quick to catch it before it goes into USA system load.
Hence I have finger on 'k' to press as soon as that page starts to appear.

Next it does a hardware search and lots of things detecting your CPU,
Graphics etc. text lines scroll by, then VOICE should say
"initiating start up sequence"
before opening into the main page, which has the compiz

Is this what you get?

4 When it loads to a USA keyboard it is still usable but you need to
remember shift+2 = @ for email entries.

5 GParted should be working from USA keyboard and menu and you can use
it without needing the UK keyboard.

6 Problem: I have never had it load lines with 'default' or a choice.
This is new to me.
On one machine (Uni machine , not my property) I need to use UEFI
settings and load for secure boot etc.

However your lines may be be a graphical user interface choice, if your
graphics allows various settings.

7 I have used Knoppix on probably over 50 different computers and never
had other than the first screen with Penguin and line to enter boot
adjustments.

7.1 What is context of the lines you see?
