Seconded in the strongest possible terms. All this new-fangled kit need batteries. A proper compass, map and skill is mandatory in my opinion even if you want to play with your GPS.

I can raise you a foggy forest in the dark with a bunch of greenhorn scouts in tow. Trees tend to get in the way of walking a bearing - it wasn't fun - actually it was, but only when I'd got them all back to camp in one piece :)
