Interesting.
I run Thunderbird on all platforms (Linux, MS various from XP to Win 7,
no Mac systems) under POP, with settings all set to 'leave email on
server permanently'. (I.e. available by web mail if necessary from any
location)
This allows local download of all email to local hard discs and local
archive off mail system. (I.e backed up to a document file included in
backups. Contractual signed stuff, design data safety related, (faults
in design could cause big damage and loss of life), and NDAs are also
recorded on paper at two locations.)

Reason.
I must maintain a copy 'under my permanent control' of all financial or
contractual matters for subsequent investigation if necessary, within a
15 years time scale for most data, but 40 years for one type of
specific record under UK law, by a number of different UK and umpteen
foreign government agencies.
Courts do not allow non access as a reason for not having a record. The
cloud or IMAP can fail - server company go bust, or cease provision* and
then data is inaccessible. Much to be said for hard copies available
within the jurisdiction.
Lack of such 'local permanent record under my control' could include a
spell in prison of many times my life span and utter financial ruin ! .
I sometimes ponder how they would divide my body between the jurisdictions.

* Example: Recent stopping of service by Sky of a subsidiary email
system lost many people their emails. I had some correspondence on this
from folk who lost their email address and history content.
