Fab Lab in Devon

Posted on 2013-09-19 by Paul Sutton

Proposal to develop a Fab Lab / Maker Lab in Exeter

Devon County Council is trying to establish if there is an interest in getting a Fab Lab or Maker Lab off the ground, possibly in Exeter Library (which as you know is currently closed for refurbishment, re-opening in April 2014).

Please click through to this short survey – only 12 quick questions! – online here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1p9t4rOn5_WxPSmrEQ8gwttRjeZamuQp8JBy0gGn51VE/viewform

What is a Fab Lab / Maker Lab?

A Fab Lab (= Fabrication Laboratory) is a low-cost digital workshop equipped with laser-cutters, routers, 3D scanners, 3D milling machines, and programming tools, where you can “make almost anything.” There are over 100 Fab Labs around the world, open to local inventors, small businesses, and garage entrepreneurs. The Fab Lab concept was created by Prof. Neil Gershenfeld and Bakhtiar Mikhak at MIT.

Proposal

To develop a digital fabrication facility (“Fab Lab”) in the refurbished Exeter Library to enable early-stage product prototyping and the ability to “make almost anything” for businesses, community users, artists and education, adopting the principles of the Fab Lab movement.

Interesting article esp the part about how the industry needs tax breaks and delays caused by the EU getting in the way of helping the industry.

Posted on 2013-09-07 by Paul Sutton
Beta 1’s are now available for testing. They are the pretty much the finished article (art work follows a bit later). If you want to see how 13.10 behaves on your system and ensure it behaves, now is a really good time to grab it!!

Raspberry pi jam – dummies code

Posted on 2013-08-26 by Paul Sutton

At the Raspberry Pi jam on Saturdaqy 24th I was helping one of the younger visitors with some code from Raspberry Pi for dummies. I suggested looking on the dummies website for the source code to the programs in the book.

I have done this myself and the code is at the link below under downloads

http://www.dummies.com/store/product/Raspberry-Pi-For-Dummies.productCd-1118554213,navId-322455,descCd-DOWNLOAD.html

example files.

On the pi you can right click and extract here or use the unzip command (I think) to extract the files from the command line.
