Hi All

In view of this my HP box needs upgrading in terms of ram and I need
to burn to a memory stick. I haven't been able to do this at the
moment. Could anybody help with this please? I have tried burning to a
stick a couple of times and it isn't bootable. I would happily
contribute towards beer fund etc if someone did this.

Also is it still best to go down the FreeNAS route?

Can't comment on FreeNAS, never used it.... but... I'd recommend getting DDR3 EEC memory for your HP MicroServer. Assuming you got the Gen 7 one (the one under 200 quid) it can take up to 8GB Ram (2 x 4GB) according to Crucial.com (seems they have a new Gen 8 version which can take 16GB but is around 400 quid at the moment).

As for USB booting, here's the settings I have set on my server:

Advanced Menu:
   USB Configuration:
      USB BIOS Support Enabled
      BIOS EHCI Hand-Off Enabled

      USB Mass Storage Device Configuration:
USB Mass Storage Reset Delay 20 Sec

         Device #1 Ut165 USB2FlashStorage0.00Utf
         Emulation Type Auto

Boot Menu:

Boot Device Priority: 1st Boot Device USB: Ut165 USB2Flas
                        2nd Boot Device Network:MBA v14.0.

Hard Disk Drives: 1st Drive: USB:Ut165 USB2Flas
                        2nd Drive: HDD:PS-MAXTOR STM3
                        3rd Drive: HDD:P0-ST3500830AS
                        4th Drive: HDD:P1-ST3500830AS
                        5th Drive: HDD:P2-ST1000DM003
                        6th Drive: HDD:P3-ST1000DM003

USB Device Boot Priority High

So I'd check your Hard Disk Drives to make sure the USB device is set to the 1st drive (it may have set the hard drive as the first device) and check Boot Device Priority to make sure the USB device is also listed there (I gather you can set it to Network, Disabled or whatever is the first device in the list of hard disk drives).

For testing purposes, if the internal USB doesn't work, try one of the front or back USB ports (actually just now is the first time I've tried the internal USB port).

Good luck, maybe if the FreeNAS stick doesn't work try another OS. I'd suggest maybe Debian (you can get the Netinst ISO which is only about 300MB and dd the ISO straight to the USB stick). At least you'd be able to fathom if the stick is ok.
