Ok, you're going to have to go old school and burn a DVD, and then try
booting from that. I've run into this error before, and will have a
quick look around to see if I can find the fix for the USB installer.

Do you still have the old Mint 13 installer lying around? Try that,
using the same nomodeset trick, and see if that will get you to the
installer. If it does, it may well be easiest to install 13 and
immediately dist-upgrade to 14.
