Right, what happens if you:

Boot the system, immediately interrupt the 10 second installer countdown
On the menu, select the top default option and press tab to edit the options
Delete the "quiet splash --" entries at the end of the boot stanza
Replace it with "noacpi noapic nomodeset" instead
And hit return to boot

Cheers

Done that.
We are now back to "unable to find a medium containing a live file system." with the error message

Modprobe: module i8042 not found in modules.dep
modprobe: module atkbd not found in modules.dep
[ 118.776162] uhci_hcd: USB Universal Hodt Controller Interface driver
[ 118.779552] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid
[ 118:779591] usbhid: USB HID core driver

I'm now in BusyBox
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) command prompt

There was also a lot of error messages during boot about not being able to access sata. There is info around about this where sata 6 is used but my cheapy m/board only has sata 3.
