(/etc/passwd, and /etc/shadow should tell you that). The wiki says root is disabled as standard in ubuntu. Looking at K3bSetup via sudo and password, it checks the devices (PHILIPS CDRW/DVD SCB5625 in /dev/scd0 and /dev/sg1) and gives ther old permissions as 660 root.cdrom and the new permissions as 666 root.cdrom with no obvious facility to change the permissions beyond that. Mark said: I still feel the comment I made before about the disk either needing time to be detected once you choose burn or perhaps media incompatability is most likely. If that is so, why does it accept a file by drag and drop once only - at least in GNOME? (dragging and dropping does not work in KDE) And attempting to open it in KDE it says there is a malformed url. I am tempted to reinstall with the later 7.04. If I do so, presumably I should copy back /home - should I uninstall 6.06 first - if so, how? Unless you can suggest a command line approach to changing the permissions using sudo. Then perhaps I can upgrade via the standard ubuntu method.
