CoderDojos coming to Devon

CoderDojos coming to Devon

Local volunteer power needed to help turn Devon’s young people into tech ninjas

Devon has been selected as one of two parts of the UK to host a new initiative which will see thousands of the county’s 87,000 7-17 year-olds get together to learn to code and create with technology in a fun, creative environment at CoderDojo clubs.

The charity running the project – the Raspberry Pi Foundation – is now looking for adult volunteers who can spare just a few hours a month over evenings or weekends to support the brand new CoderDojos with ‘volunteer power’.

If you’re passionate about inspiring young people – including your own children – to be creative with technology you can sign up now to be part of CoderDojo’s team of volunteers. Visit coderdojo.com/volunteer-devon to find out more.

Within each CoderDojo volunteer team, the charity is looking for a mixture of people with different skills, including:

  • Programming experience – some familiarity with coding

  • Some experience with young people – ranging from supervising a play date to coaching a school sports team

  • Creativity – this could be in working life or your spare time

Volunteering gives people the chance to develop teamwork and digital skills, meet new people and give back to their local community. There’s no need to teach or stand up at the front – volunteers are there to support smaller groups of young people with projects that the young people lead and are excited about.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Devon-based charity, Libraries Unlimited, and will see nine brand new CoderDojos set up in in libraries in Bideford, Braunton, Crediton, Exeter, Ottery St Mary, South Molton, Teignmouth, Paignton and Totnes.
