Lets try to fix it.So, I need a USB driveÂrather than the installer DVD....
That's the first little challenge. Fortunately there are some other computers around.

chrooting in to fix (I can tell you how to do this) or if you'd prefer, building a clean system and restoring from yesterdays backup is going to be required to fix this.
