Well, I see where you're coming from but I fear a little for your
sysadmin skills if rebuilding kernels:

A: isn't complete second nature to you by now
B: isn't a routine part of performance/security tuning
C: is considered as "playing around with things"

What strange world do you live in where optimising the kernel on
mission-critical production systems is "playing around"?!!!

I think that perhaps the rationale behind formatting your RAID array
with ext2 could do with some explanation as well :]
