Just to show how baffling this all is. Today, Wed 23rd October I tested again via speedtest.org 3:48 pm Download speed given as 2.96 Mb/s (that is not a typo) So I switched off the router and left it for a while. With the router back on I tested it again. 4:46 pm Download speed is now given as 12.03Mb/s. If anyone can explain that I would be very grateful. I can't see that the contention can have changed that much in an hour.If you don't check the sync. speed at the same time, then the results are meaningless.
Sorry, forgot to include that. The sync speed was14 Mb/s
However if you did check the sync. speed and it was fine, then essentially, it's either over contention in the BT wholesale network, or that you simply have a sub-optimal ISP who can't cope with demand. Also, my bet is that it would have returned to the original speed if you hadn't power cycled the router. You're not actually achieving anything there, but if you think you are, then fine. It probably makes you feel better though, but really, it's doing nothing. Why not try running mtr too - e.g. mtr -r www.bbc.co.uk
So I did that and here is a result.
