>>>> I tried to use software center in ubuntu to install drivers for a mfc-j615w and it really does not like the .deb file provided by brother. Well, there's part of your problem right there - software center is one of the useless pieces of crap that immediately needs to be removed from any vanilla ubuntu install, along with ubuntu-one, overlay scrollbars, unity and a whole bunch of other rubbish. Inexplicably lots of the useful stuff that you will actually need on any linux box is missing from ubuntu these days so the first thing I find myself doing is something like: apt-get install openssh-server nfs-kernel-server build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` gnome-shell awesome zsh wget synaptic htop gitcore cvs wireshark That lessens the initial pain of ubuntu somewhat but you'll still need ubuntu-tweak and a whole bunch of PPAs added before the system is even usable, let alone bearable. I certainly don't want to start a distro vs distro flamewar in a printer thread, but I really struggle to see why anyone would use ubuntu over vanilla debian these days. Actually, I'm not even sure why anybody would choose ubuntu over *any* other linux or BSD flavour, apart from (undeserved) name recognition.
