They were glad to offer a room for free and showed me one that would accommodate a group of 12 or maybe more, perhaps free because I pointed out those attending would have drinks and maybe snacks. There would be car parking free too.
Do you mean they would offer a small conference/meeting room free? When I first read it I thought they would offer over night accommodation free :-) (which got me thinking, maybe we could get other folks from other LUGs and maybe actual FLOSS organizations to visit).
It may be appropriate here to explain my thinking at the time; I am not aware of many LUG members in this area but would like to encourage others to move over to Ubuntu or any other flavour that interests and considered placing an article in the Upottery 'Parish Pump' to see if some serious interest could be drummed up amongst a few then it may be worth trying to drag some of you capable chaps over this way (we contribute to fuel) to help those interested get started and do installs. It is unlikely people would be up and properly sorted after one session up here and suspect at least 3 would be about right. wochafink!
I think it sounds like a good idea. Maybe start with a demonstration session. My fear is that if we set them up then they would get home and possibly struggle, hence maybe have a taster session for them so they can see, use, touch and feel Linux (okay maybe not touch and feel).
Sounds good for a mid devon venue, Given I can't personally do anything between now and April can I leave this in your hands, perhaps looking at the dates we have paignton meetings and the north devon meet, that leaves quite a few saturdays (assuming people want to do saturdays for this) to book something.
Saturdays are probably a good day. I'm not sure what's happening in Exeter, I haven't spoken to Rick in a while but hopefully he might get some enthusiasm to get a regular monthly LUG meeting going in Exeter (actually I think he has some enthusiasm, just possibly not a whole lot of free time).
I have quite a few Ubuntu cd's and also appreciate that not everyone on the list supports Ubuntu However my argument is that Ubuntu IS pretty well supported as a community project, and we know there are members who can use it, so support is less of an issue the more local users you have.
Not so sure about when April comes round with the Unity changes, they sound like they're going to be reasonably big changes, from what I saw when I tried the Ubuntu Netbook Remix it really put me off, maybe it might work on a Netbook, but it really put me off and made me question if Ubuntu was going in the right direction for me (hence why I'm using Mint now but it doesn't feel as well polished as Ubuntu).
To be fair though, maybe the Unity interface in Ubuntu is a step in the right direction for folks who just want something that just works, say for web browsing mainly with a bit of occasional Office stuff too?
Or I could be wrong again and maybe it's just for die hard style fanatics.
lets give it a go, There are several of these local mini magazines around so signposting people to the dclug site may also be a good idea, esp if its directly to the events page. I think getting things published in these is pretty easy as they are always looking for content. I would still support the fund raising idea though it does give us that breathing space should we want to do a bigger event, and need the capital to rent somewhere. or simply buy resources e.g blank cd's
Yeah, I'm sure a few of us from around the area (especially those of us in Torbay) could make it along.
Paul, there was mention of that church in Newton Abbott. I believe a lug member knows the folks that look after it and that we could meet there for free.
It was Rhia's friend Steve as far as I know, things seem to have gone quiet on that front.
