So boot up eg mint 7, and spin that cube!
Hmmm - ok - It did not seem to do that when I booted mint 8.1 on my
year old laptop, however, I will investigate. Thank you Rhia.

Even though I asked the original question (for my friends benefit),
personally I don't like "lights and clockwork" - I like simplicity and
speed, ideally the command line - ok, ok, perhaps with a web browser
thrown into the party. haha! But I do love the fact that linux users
have the freedom to choose exactly what they want and how they want it
:-)

Best wishes

I too feel that KDE has gone rather OTT. Which is the reason that, on my
laptop, I have installed Mint 7 Xfce. And it works very well for me.

I cant be sure but I get the impression everything is a bit OTT. My viglen/LXFE machine seems a lot lot slower that my old 50Mhz 486/XFCE despite having a cpu that should be at least 15 times the power and running a lot less. It could be an illusion but I dont think so...
Anyone know of a curses X window manager?
