Hmmm - ok - It did not seem to do that when I booted mint 8.1 on my
year old laptop, however, I will investigate. Thank you Rhia.

Even though I asked the original question (for my friends benefit),
personally I don't like "lights and clockwork" - I like simplicity and
speed, ideally the command line - ok, ok, perhaps with a web browser
thrown into the party. haha! But I do love the fact that linux users
have the freedom to choose exactly what they want and how they want it
:-)
