In the old days when no-one knew any better and BIOSs were limited to not being able to boot off partitions or disks of a certian size, then having the very first partition of a disk small was the way to go - that would typically be /boot.
I did it a slightly different way back then, but then I had many years prior to Linux with other Unixes...
It looks like Henry has /boot as a separate partition, so it has a lost+found directory.So have I (got /boot on a separate partition), on three machines, but no l+f. Here, lost+found exists under / with another l&f under /home for userland stuff.
Maybe you're not using ext2/3/4 ? I'm not sure which other filesystems have lost+found directories.
Or maybe /boot isn't really a separate partition? Does it show up in the output of df, or mount ?
