I've put them into Entanets own checker and the Sam Knows checker and they
reckon you ought to be getting about 1.5Mb/sec, rather than your fixed
500Kb/sec.

However there are other factors to consider, but even so...

As an indication of services, Enta is a tad more expensive than some, but
their "Business 15" package - which has a data cap of 15GB a month, and
elevated data over the BTW network would cost you £19.75 + VAT, their
"Family 30" (30GB) is £18.95 inc vat. (There is no cap at off-peak times)

Could you "sneak" broadband onto the PO line? (if it's not already
enabled). Then you could port your BT number into a VoIP platform to keep
the number and save the line rental...

The Po uses BT broadband ( for the Office Services so no)
We are some 5 1/2 miles with some very iffy cabling in this area. Some
properties have no BB at all!

Do you know what the stats are for the PO line? Might be interesting to
know..

Sam Knows has you some 5.5 Km in a straight line, so 5.5 miles by road
might be about right.... That's on the edge. Odd the checkers are quite
optomistic though. I wonder if you've been on a fixed-rate service for
historical reasons and they have changed the margins since then...

Do all the usual stuff too - remove third-wire and un-needed extensions,
good faceplate, modem close to master socket, etc. although it won't make
any difference on the fixed speed system you have at present, but if you
migrate and they take you off the fixed speed it might be worth it.

Didnt know I was on a fixed Speed!

I was making an assumption based on the speed you gave... Does your modem/router give you the SNR values?

But knowing, as you've indicated below, that you've had it for 5 years, I suspect it would be a good assumption. A lot of ISPs don't automatically migrate their customers off the old ADSL1 (2Mb) circuits to the newer ADSL2 (8Mb) equipment.

I have had the Line now for 5 years and avoided all attempts renew my
contract with promises of 8meg if I sign up for longer.

Most sensible ISPs offer a monthly contract now.

Just remember it's "up to" 8Mb. A term I never liked - If I was offered up to a pint of beer I'd not be happy...

However - I've rarely seen the checkers being overly optomistic, so if both Sam Knows and Enta says you should get 1.5Mb, then that's a good indication of what you'll actually get. No guarantees, but ...

I may bight the bullet and cancel both the Phone and & internet the go
with perhaps the P Office for both on a residential basis.

You may have an issue with the line being classed as a business line by BT, but let them deal with it :)

Also, and personally, I'd not put everything in the one pot. BT is OK for the copper, but I'd not put both the copper rental and ADSL to the same company unless I knew more about their business. The down-side of doing this is that should there be a line fault, you need to go via the PO who then contact BT OpenReach to do the work - in theory BT need to do this too, but somehow, it's always seemed easier & quicker to me when I've had to do this...

If I disappear for a while you will know I failed!

Good luck :)
