I've often thought abut doing something like this myself also but have often 
stopped short becuase of the lack of small cases avaliable (even HTPC cases 
are few and far between and don't compare to what the big boys seem to have 
access to).

I don't think you can get away without any RAM since (and I am entering 
unknown terrority here) even a Diskless Terminal will need some RAM? - If 
anyone can contradict this statement I would be most interested since this 
could be a serious misunderstanding on my part.

The Heat aspect can be dealt with as per most fanless systems by using an 
external power supply - This won't solve all your issues though but a lot of 
motherboards at www.mini-itx.com can help here. Having a seperate power 
supply is not the most desiarable choice in my opnion but if it means the 
difference between having a fan or not I think it's a good compromise.

Being Devil's Advocate at  then end of the day though if you can get 
something like this quite cheap is there a point in DIY?
