I've written a tutorial at

if you want some basics in cutting things out.  We did colouring for 
that particular one, but once it's isolated on a layer you can do 
anything with it, and you can turn the masks into selections if you want 
to lift something off.

What makes you say we need an educationalist?  Do you mean one with 
experience in GIMP?
