_javascript_ is useful within its intended function.
XHTML is for markup, CSS is for formatting, and _javascript_ is for enhancing the markup. It is best used IMO for emulating WebForms until they emerge, but of course there is the whole AJAX thing which, if implemented properly, can be very good and not unaccessible. It should never be used outside the context of DOM, and absolutely never, ever, or I will do unpleasant things to you in place of hyperlinks :)

Agreed. I have been trying to learn HTML for a while now and I have
seen some awful code around. I do plan to make my coding as good as I
possibly can.

Typically it's just a case of validating it obsessively :)
