Asterisk can be a bit of a beast, but the asterisk at home project has 
bundled it, together with some whizzy add-ons and a supporting linux 
distro.  If you're interested in telephony (and a box that, for example 
you can use to give you wake-up calls or go get weather forecasts and 
read them to you over the 'phone, have a look at
