Sounds a good idea,  I take it gentoo is based on debian, so I can run 
apt-get or whatever

My laptop has been reverted back to WinXP in order to try and get 
something working,  this has failed,  so once again I have no use for 
XP, feel free to nuke my 10gb hdd and install either debian or gentoo, 
Perhaps debian from a recent cd and someone can perhaps demonstrate how 
to do it, as I think it would be useful to know how to install,
