To be honest they didn't really give me any advice then and just fobbed
me off with a "we don't deal with outside programmes" and your script

But Richard, if your email to them was as non-informative as your post to the
list, I can see why they could not help you. Always be specific, give the
exact error message, the exact log message, the full name of all programs,
URL's, ls -l listings if appropriate, the more *accurate* information you
supply the more help you will get. Claiming the program said 'No Way' will
get you nowhere. I know it didn't say that, they know it didn't say that -
what you need to say is precisely what it DID say. Even (especially) if it
makes no sense to you. Copy and paste it exactly as it is displayed.

I don't know what they do all day long and maybe I am judging them
unfairly

Yes, you are. You are being extremely unfair. How can anyone help you without
the information required? You've asked here - probably the most friendly,
helpful and well-informed group you could wish to find for this kind of issue
- but haven't got an answer because we can't tell what you're actually doing!

but I have to admit that I promptly wrote an email to Phone
Coop who provude the dial-up access and asked how much to transfer!

It won't help if you don't understand what went wrong last time.

You'll be doomed to repeat the same error because you haven't understood the
problem.
