National ID can work if everyone gains from it. Examples include

India's was mired in court cases about its purpose, it being mandated (when the court ruled it shouldn't be), it is strictly not an identity card according to India, it fits closer to a US social security number.

India's scheme has exactly the faults I fear, lack of clear purpose, no clear success criteria as a project, unclear financial benefits, etc. They've certainly made savings in the rollout, but it isn't clear they'll be sustained, or that they are as large as the politicians promoting it claim.

Mandatory linking to bank accounts spawned a trade is stolen fingerprints.

Doubtful denial of government services with limited avenues of appeal.

Estonia is about the same size as Birmingham, very different scale of problem.

Hi All,

Instead of reinventing the wheel, why not just mandate that everyone carries a card with their National Insurance number on it? Everyone here legally already has one. If the person is awaiting a Home office decision on their status they get a T(emporary) I(mmigrant) number.

Kind regards,

Julian
