The current push for National ID Cards has only one purpose - enhanced data collecting. As was previously mentioned there already exists government photo ID - Drivers Licence and Passport are just two examples. As long ago as 1980 when I first worked in the US a drivers licence included the holders Social Security number. If one did not drive a drivers licence was issued but without driver privileges. Add our National Insurance to the drivers licence there's simple access to say law enforcement to a central government data base. No need for a Government App on your personal smart phone. The drive for apps by almost every entity ( supermarkets .......... LIdl's parent company has started a AWS rival ) is NYC - know your customer. An app gives enhanced data harvesting capabilities, useful for far more than Meta et all's marketing antics. Almost all phones cannot be turned off. With BLE your data continues to be collected without a Sim or internet connection.
Data collected by our Government is not secure. Look at the major breaches for just this year.
Palantir ( they of Cambridge Analitica fame ) provides IT services for UK Government, Armed Services and GCHQ. Search Starmer Mandelson Palantir visit. Shortly after that March 3rd occasion Palantir were given a 330 million pound contract to provide NHS IT services.
Google has now introduced four factor verification of phones in order for the phone to be able to access Playstore Apps, in other words only an identifiable phone approved by them. AOSP
no longer allows input from independent devs, only from Google development staff. The source code is only available after each update is published. IOS is obviously completely controlled. So in order to have a mandatory Government ID you will be forced to pay for a short life and ever increasing price and give your money to a foreign duopoly for compulsory phone type. And surrender your data to them. The universal excuse is always increased security. Which equals hand over more of your money.
