TXT messages get through to UK geographic numbers just fine. (Providing you use a quality telephone company and I include BT retail here)

Well, ish. You're of course completely correct in what you say, but I recently had a problem caused by this.

The BT landline rang. I answered it. At the same time the dogs started barking at the postman.

I could only hear the last two words of the sms message that had been sent to it, and there was no option to replay - BT just hung up after speaking (in fairly poor text-to-voice) it once.

No reference to the caller and no message received. Yet the sender considered the message successfully delivered.

I admit no system is foolproof. But this is not as reliable as a true SMS, yet the sender might consider it sufficient proof that I had heard and understood their message.

That sounds similar to the ISP I used to work for, no names to protect the guilty / dopey.  We had an early email to text service whereby a customer could get the subject and sender of an email sent to them by SMS.  When they got home they could then download the full message.  However we swapped from Send Mail to Intermail and somebody decided we no longer needed the 'Leave on Server' option for forwarded messages.  It took me about ten seconds to email the manager involved after the first customer rang and said they'd had a text alert and when they got home there was no email - because the system had deemed it forwarded and then deleted it.  The response I received was 'Sh*t.. I'll get them to change that now!'
