(saying that I have a Pi which I can use for that, this would maybe come in handy as a low energy backup machine to leave at one of my parents houses to backup my import stuff to (I figure bung on a lightweight install of some Linux distro and slot in a 32GB MicroSD for storage :-D ...

This is the best comparison of the Beaglebone and the Pi I have seen so far,

http://www.cnx-software.com/2013/04/25/beaglebone-black-vs-raspberry-pi-features-and-price-comparison/

and it says that the Beaglebone doesn't have any hardware media decoding which I have also read elsewhere. That's a shame but similarly I have XBMC running on a Pi and it works okay so I can live without it.
