To achieve the same thing when running Windows I'd suggest using Putty. It's a Windows based SSH/Telnet client.
Using an SSH client means that you can get a command line on the Pi from a remote machine.
This might help you if you're using a Windows machine: http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/raspberry-pi-sshIf you want to get X (GUI) applications running over an SSH connection you can use X tunnelling over SSH with the XMing application.
This briefly tells you how to get XMing running: http://raspberrypi.wikia.com/wiki/Running_Graphical_Apps_from_Putty_SSHYou can also use VNC too, this guide seems to be fairly good at explaining how to enable SSH and then VNC...
