Did you follow the instructions to run raspi-config (it runs automatically the first time you boot if you have a screen and keyboard)?

If you ssh'd in (for the very first time) then you need to run it manually.

You really DO need to run it the first time.

One vitally important option is the "Resize" option. If you used a 4GB (or more) SD card, then only the first 2GB is active. You absolutely must resize the SD card and there is a script in raspi-config to do this for you.

Also, if you use apt-get a lot, then occassionally, you need to

  apt-get clean

to delete the downloaded packages.
