This is mainly should someone decide to steal the PC, then they won't be able to get at whatever is on there. I perform backups to an external USB drive which is also encrypted (little point in encrypting /home then storing an unencrypted backup of it. All the thief would have to do is steal the external drive too). My home PC has little that is important under /etc or /var. All my mail is handled under /home. However, for a different setup, then this may well be true. At work I don't use an encrypted partition, but I have one file which I protect simply by encrypting it with GPG.
