rather than alsamixer have you used  from 
System Preferences Sound ? mine in Fedora is a Right click on the
speaker icon near the Clock or from the System menu, Preferences, Sound.

This should show you the hardware, input devices and output devices
my sound card is a Creative labs surround sound one, with "Digital and
Analogue outputs. If I select Digital out, I get nothing as I have
analogue speakers connected. Also it should auto select the input but in
mine if I want the Mic, I need to manually set it here and if I want
Line in I have to change it back again.
