Probably bandwidth, reliability and prevalence of NAT/PAT

Demon use to do something like this with dial but I think they gave
static IP addresses.
I was on Demon back in the mid-late 90s and had a subdomain.. it was standard back then for them.. dynamic IP address though. I expect some ISPs still do provide the service, not that I can think who off the top of my head :)
