Printers are for print companies - not for consumers!

That is true, the cost of cartridges from all the vendors seems to be pretty expensive. I can't remember which manufacturer recently advertised their printer as being the cheapest one available, if I remember I'll post it to the list. Might actually be Lexmark (who have traditionally been really expensive for cartridges).

1) Dont get a colour printer - you dont need one. We can look at all out
photos on screen and if we do need to print a few to send to stone age
relatives then most print services are cheaper than a single cartridge
for a colour printer that will block up after using it twice when you
first get it and then leaving it unused for a couple of months!

Actually that is a point, when we get photos printed (rarely) we take them down to Jessops on a USB stick and get them printed. Not the cheapest option I know, there are others like Snapfish, and a lot of these online photo printing companies have offers such as 100 free prints (and there are so many out there). Any colour printing we tend to do is on our colour laser printer (although the majority is B&W).

If you do feel the need for a colour printer I'd make sure I can get
cheap refillable cartridges for it

Personally I prefer just the cheap compatibles, for me it means less mess. I used to have a continuous ink system for my old Epson R200, cost something like £20 and had the capacity of about 10 cartridges, ink was bulk and cheap as chips, well that was until it stopped working. Might have just been a faulty unit, oh and it was messy to refill, but I might have just had bad luck with it.
