I use CM and have done for many years (well, it was previously
Sylpheed, then Sylpheed-Claws and now Claws-Mail).  I too personally
dislike the Outlookesque view... so I just disabled it.  I found it
works well over a 2G connection to an IMAP server (Google, in this
instance) - obv. 3.5G is nicer though. :D
