Re: [LUG] Firefox 3.6.3/Mandriva

Thanks Rob and Gordon.

The backstory is that I was running PCLos (which Simon Roberts kindly put me on to when I was looking for an alternative to Mandriva) very satisfactorily until my machine (a formerly networked Dell) blew. I retrieved an ancient Dell Dimension 2350 (Celeron 2GHz) from the attic and have been trying to run that ever since.

PCLos wouldn't install. It appeared to be unable to interpret ASCII keyboard input (wouldn't display it accurately and didn't interpret the commands as typed). Kubuntu seemed okay but fell apart when I put it on KDE4. Can't remember why Ubuntu didn't work, but I found it very restrictive as well as unreliable. So back to Mandriva, which has been okay (sort of) apart from frequent freezing, particularly when Firefox is running video.

I've got MPlayer, Totem and Quicktime plugins installed and enabled (Quicktime is set for MPEG-4 - is this right?).

Just to add to my woes, Firefox is now impersonating Brian the Snail.

box tells me that MPEG-4 is handled by my Quicktime plugin 7.2.0. I note
that Fluenda is being sold by Mandriva.

Mandriva is the only distro I can get to run on my creaky old
Dell/Celeron machine. Do I have to get a new computer? Needless to say,
there is no advice available at Mandriva.

You should be able to play MPEG4 video with some GStreamer plugins. I'm not really up to scratch with my knowledge of Mandriva but I'd have thought there should be some sort of plugins available. Otherwise you may have a bit more luck adding the MPlayer plugin for Firefox.

Sorry I can't be much more help, but hopefully it might give you some pointers.

Maybe someone on the list using Mandriva (or I believe PCLinuxOS which AFAIK is based on Mandriva) might be able to offer a bit more help.
