try checking for a package called win32codecs and also the vlc media
player which comes with lots of codecs. failing that just stick "codec"
into the software manager search box and download pretty much everything
it comes up with.

I'm not using mandriva these days, so can't remember what I installed,
but I have used mandriva with mpeg4 (kaffeine as the player). Also as
suggested installing mplayer and related packages may do the trick.
