My Point is that they know they are using windows but if ask what
version they don't always know even though it may come up with windows
vista as a splash screen.

ok example they are using Vista, but say they are using windows, you
could say say press start, where is start?, (get my idea here),
people to me should at least know which OS they are using.

We get people on irc saying "my linux doesn't work, please help," then
getting stuck when asked for more helpful information, if we can help
people to help the people who are going to help them over irc or the
list free of charge then at least lets have the info we need.

I am sure Office is pretty much the same but sometimes a solution can be
version specific, if you know what version of MS word someone is using
you can be more helpful.

Its hard enough to help people over the phone when they are lacking
knowledge / confidence to give you an idea of what they are looking at.

as i said lets
help people
to help them
to help us
with support,

a simple script to tell is what kernel they are using uname -a would do
perhas the output of ifconfig or iwconfig
and cpuinfo, and a few other bits can be really really helpful to
solving basic issues.

run script and get them to e-mail us that file it produces.
