I use Debian, so I'm going to be biased. There does seem to be a strong
Ubuntu contingent here though!

I have Debian on my Acer Aspire One and wifeys AAO, my Acer Aspire 5050,
my workstation(s) and all my servers scattered throughout Devon, Bristol
and Sheffield... It's also used to 'bootstrap' the code for my 'embedded'
PBXs...

Most things seem to work on it - you shouldn't have any more issues with
it than must other distributions regarding media playing (the usual DVD
malarky). Email - claws, thunderbird, evolution; web - firefox; photo
stuff - gimp; rdp - there's gnome-rdp and xrdp, never used them myself,
and so on...

Thanks very much for all of your advice. I have a Linux Format disc with Debian 5 on it and I will install this. I hope you don't mind if I ask a few more questons?

I do use wifi and have a Linux friendly Edimax EW-7108PCG Wifi PCMCIA Card. This works perfectly with Mandriva and (I understand) Ubuntu (no driver installation needed).

I also use an HP PSC 1510 printer / scanner, using HPLIP.

Also, I like to watch the news and, occasionally BBC IPlayer.

Could you tell me where I could check compatibility for my hardware? I don't think any of these requirements pose any problems for Ubuntu but, am not sure about Debian.
