Hi Why are we not just using: System, Administration, Synaptic, package Manager, sun-java-6-whatever? Or Programs - Add/Remove - search for java in the box and select whichever tick box for the java you want to install. Apply. Again. Ubuntu DOES NOT use a separate root account by default. When promted for a password use you own password you set up at installation. In a terminal you can use sudo "command you want to run" followed by your user password when prompted. If you stay in the same terminal you won't get aked for the password if using sudo again for a set period of time. You can also use sudo su which will then aske for you account password. Then any command you enter after that will be treated as a root command. Very bad if you forget you are operating as root.
