ramfs or initramfs is nothing specifically to do with a live distro.
Often linux kernels are built with many drivers as modules, this
includes IDE drivers and SATA drivers. If you boot a kernel with these
devices as modules the kernel cannot connect to the disk drive and
load the modules as it does not have the drivers. So what is common is
that the boot loader (grub and friends) will load an initramfs which
is built to contain various kernel modules and may be a helper shell
such as busybox .

It looks like the the boot has dropped in to the busybox shell for
some reason. I assume grub is running ok and it is failing after this
point. You may need to enter the grub shell and play with root and hd
options.

Are you getting anything else before this? I presume the actual kernel
is not being booted at all so we are pre-kernel here.
