yes, another potential (re)convert here...

I was going to use Partition Magic from windows because I feel, perhaps
wrongly, that it is less likely to wreck my windows installation.

Yes, but then my WEP code should be remembered for as long as it is
needed. It's not a big issue, but I think that a security feature which
is specific to Ubuntu and which has absolutely zero documentation as far
as I can tell is a bit off. Maybe the Ubuntu website will help me.

I absolutely have to find a way to disable my synaptics touchpad but not
the mouse buttons. I googled around and found instructions involving
syndaemon which I have used in my .xinitrc, only it just doesn't seem to
work. I've just run the command manually and it does seem to work
however. I wonder why it is not being exectuted in .xinitrc? Oh wait,
do I need to do something like sh -c "syndaemon -d"?

Anyway, I'm sure it will all get sorted out in the end.

Thanks for the support and words of encouragement. Even for an old hand
like me it is scary moving back to linux because of the amount of time
and energy it can take to get _everything_ working. Must keep reminding
myself that I don't have to keep rebooting and repairing a linux
installation. Now if I could just get hibernate to work from Ubuntu...

Matthew.
