I'd still be reluctant to open up the firewall and make your home
system more vulnerable if I were you.

I find it pretty easy to push anything I need when away onto any of
the following :
* cheap bytemark virtual server
* mp3 player
* one of the half dozen usb keys I have lying around that I pretty
much use like I did floppys back in the day.

You can get a virtual server hosted in the states for 6 quid a month
redwood iirc, handy for backing up important files, and useful for
playing with cgi scripts, etc.
