replying to myself - not good form! During the install the driver 
creates a module interface between itself and the kernel (as I 
understand it which ain't deeply). So I guess that on a reboot kubuntu 
is overwriting/replacing/ignoring/whatever this thingy (technical term).

Does anyone know anything I could try?
