Thanks for investigating this! :-) In our case the PC's will be 2GHz,
512MB machines. The network is gigabit core with 100MB to each PC. At
present the LTSP clients just run a shell, no X window. They basically run
the kernel in memory and the remaining parts of the setup come from an NFS
share to the LTSP server. However, that share is mainly just to
send/receive grid jobs which run in memory (we use the 'Condor' package to
handle the grid side of things). The linux grid does nothing but run grid
jobs, there are no 'users' as such.

Our LTSP server acts as the PXE server as well, but DHCP is done via a
Windows box. However, since it points DHCP'ing clients to the PXE server
it shouldn't require any change (as it all works at present).

>From what you have said though it seems that adding a new package to the
LTSP server either automatically installs it into the relevant parts
necesary for LTSP, or it is necessary to re-install it using something
else which will install it correctly for LTSP. Either way it is easier
than at present where I need to rebuild things from source :-)

Secondly, as far as I remember ubuntu LTSP uses a 2.6 kernel, whereas our
4.1 LTSP uses a 2.4 kernel. This can be a problem, if our users create a
job dependant on a 2.6 library, then it may well not run on a 2.4 kernel
(i.e. the current grid).

When I manage to get some hardware together I'll see about trying all this
out.
