I have recently discovered that I am missing the /dev/psaux device on my laptop. This doesn't usually affect me since I use a usb mouse most of the time, and that works fine. However, on the odd occasion that I do want to use the touchpad, it's not there.
In 2.5/2.6 /dev/psaux has become a legacy option which you have to select during kernel configuration. A good idea is to configure your X server to use "/dev/input/mice". This way you only need one entry in your X server configuration for all of your input devices and if you decide to add or remove devices you won't need to restart X. I have a touchpad, graphics tablet and USB mouse working like this, and use them simultaneously. ^_^ I'm not sure if it works if you use the synaptics driver to use your touchpad.. I gave up using the synaptics driver on my ALPS pad because "features" like sticky button got on my nerves.
