parted has made a real mess of this drive. The 1Gb is now allocated to the

do it. Try resizing different partitions, and moving. You should of
course be using parted from a bootdisk. I remember seeing RH8 installer
with it. Just ctrl+alt+f2 and parted /dev/hda

Simon's tip helped - after downloading the images (boot and parted itself) I
couldn't get dd to work but the readme on the parted site helped. I was
trying to copy to /mnt/floppy, changing to /dev/fd0 allowed the entire image
to be written properly.

The parted readme also notes that the starting cylinder of a ext2 partition
cannot be moved, even with a bootdisk. As there wasn't enough room to move
the root partition, I shrunk the root partition, extended the extended
partition, made a new logical partition for the /boot partition. copied the
partition over, deleted the previously primary /boot partition, and resized
it to take up the spare 1Gb. Hey presto. (Pity I couldn't merge the two
primaries or just resize the root to include the space in front of it.)
