I chose to tick the boxes. I'm confident any events would be dealt with by the procedures I put in place and the training I can be seen to have performed. And nobody is going to legislate against VPN use - the words are practically meaningless. The LUG is covered it it puts the procedures in place. The procedures depend on reporting and clearly if the LUG had a report it would implement the procedure. There is no breach of any law in operating that way, the LUG continues as before with children if that's the choice of the LUG and the requests of the hypothetical children. And certainly engaging with Mission:Libre in the UK would involve exactly the same process. Nothing in the OSA prohibits engagement with children of any age, it simply demands that processes exist for reporting and follow-up in the event of an incident along with all the other safety aspects which react to "terror" - and I believe even discussing that sort of matter in the current climate is unsafe. On 28/08/2025 20:42, Paul Sutton via list wrote:So what are we meant to do as a small LUG just cease to exist? I saw on LinkedIn about VPNs, I think if it was up to the children's commissioner VPNs would require age checks, yeah go figure how that would work.Paul On 28/08/2025 20:20, John Harris via list wrote:With regard to enforcement, Ofcom is proactively contacting any number of sites to bully them into action on OSA adherence. I've not heard of them doing anything at all once a site is conformant. It's a tick-the- box issue so far, much like the Information Commissioner. Then you get the same treatment if you come to their attention is an incident - you're in a lot more trouble if you didn't conform to the initial paperwork. One needs to be large enough for them to know you exist, but then you can always end up as a headline. On 28/08/2025 19:51, Paul Sutton via list wrote:Hi, Thanks for this. I agree here, I don't really like discord that much either.I think Carmen is looking at self hosting services for this including jitsi. I think it may be difficult to begin with. I am just trying to help / support this initiative and also the lug in general, so not sure what to do.As I said before we have had teens on the lug before and I think as a group we have helped them almost as much as they have helped us. We may still have teens here, or adults with teenagers who use Linux or are interested in related topics.I can see the OSA et-al making a lot more things difficult while not actually addressing the issues. Especially if as people have said it is not very enforceable.Lets see what happens and if anyone here or in our wider communities has suggestions as to how young people can be included then ideas are welcome, that means here or elsewhere.Paul On 28/08/2025 19:35, WaiTsun Yeung wrote:If Matrix is unavailable, I would like to add my two cents about using Discord for online youth meetups.I understand Discord is quite popular for my age group (20s-30s) and the younger generation (I use it myself on a daily basis), but it has a history of adults in Discord groups posing as teenagers trying to influence the sexual behaviours of actual teenagers. And private Discord groups actually make it harder to monitor and report than open ones./Best regards,/ /William (he/his/him)// ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~/ /If you find this email at any odd hour, weekend, or holiday, it is because it works with my schedule at this time of the week or because I am sending it from the opposite end of the Earth. //So that// you know, you are not expected to reply outside / regular/ working hours!/2025年8月28日(木) 18:54 Paul Sutton via list <list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx <mailto:list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>>:On 28/08/2025 15:05, Paul Sutton via list wrote: > Thanks Dan, that is very helpful, I feel more confident about being > able to promote. >> End of the day, this is a friendly, inclusive community, helpful> community and I really want the LUG to thrive where others have fallen > off the radar. > > Re ID verification, the only time I can think of this is or was relevant > is when we used to do key signing, and that was rare. > > > Thanks again > > PaulBy a rather spooky coincidence, I just spotted this on the Matrix.orgofficial account. We have updated our Homeserver Terms and Privacy Policy.
