4GB of RAM and an Intel Core Duo is enough even for Windows 10, and will

Alright, thought experiment time.

Remember Tom isn't just buying his daughter the single most important piece of kit she's going to use to study for her science degree with for the next three years, but it's also HER XMAS PRESENT!

Your suggestion amounts to giving her a lump of coal. Happy Xmas Darling!

Imagine you're her and you unwrap a third hand 12 year old scruffy x86 laptop, complete with peeling "designed for Windows Vista" stickers on it. It's a Dual core Duo (lol) with 4Gb of DDR2. That dull TFT LCD panel will be a joy to stare at for X hours a day in glorious faded 1366x768 I'm sure. Weighs about as much as breeze block, roughly similar proportions. Battery life approximately 2 hours. Never mind, at least Dad's preinstalled some crappy dual boot loser OS on the 320Gb 5400rpm for some incomprehensible reason when you need Windows.

How are you feeling about your present now?

It feels like at this point you're trying to actively sabotage her. Do you want her to disown Tom and fail her degree? What kind of monster are you?!
